Yamaha Unveils 2020 MX & CC Models

Yamaha didn’t muck around when they released the first info and images of their 2020 machines late last week. Instead of drip-feeding the market with separate insights into the upgrades found on their Motocross and then Cross-Country models, they unveiled the lot in one fell swoop. Which kind of makes sense, because Yami’s 2020 model line-up only really sees major changes to two models – a totally redesigned YZ450F MXer, and the addition of an all-new YZ125X cross-country machine – while the rest of the YZ, YZ-F, YZ-X and YZ-FX models only get refinements for 2020.

So, just how different is the 2020 YZ450F from its predecessor? On paper, it’s very different. It comes with major mods to its engine (the 2020 powerplant is lighter and more compact, with redesigned combustion chamber, steeper valve angles and more aggressive cam profiles); a much-evolved bilateral beam alloy frame (which gets totally revised flex characteristics); major upgrades to its rolling chassis (all-new triple clamps, engine mounts and front axle, and an all-new front brake); along with a host of other refinements.

On the cross-country side of the showroom, it’s great to see that Yamaha continues to expand its offering with the addition of the all-new YZ125X two-stroke for 2020 – a bike they’re billing as “the perfect entry point to the world of enduro; a lightweight two-stroke that will kick-start your off-road journey and set you on a path to racing success … with engine changes that focus on creating broad power delivery that suits off-road terrain and a wide range of rider skill levels”.

Compared with the YZ125 MX machine it’s derived from, the 2020 YZ125X get a bunch of mods design to optimise its performance for the unique demands of racing in the bush. The 125cc, liquid-cooled, two-stroke, reed-valve-inducted engine is combined with a six-speed transmission for smoother, broader and more controllable power across the rev range. Its engine gets different Digital CDI ignition settings, and mods to power-valve and cylinder head combustion chamber. The model is also ‘enduro-ised’ via an O-ring chain, sidestand fuel tank petcock with reserve position, and Dunlop Geomax AT81 tyres with an 18-inch rear. And underlining YMA’s commitment to make this new 125 appealing to off-road racers is the fact it’ll also come with a special off-road kit fitted – which includes lights that are designed to enable recreational registration in relevant states.
