What is WP’s new “XACT” suspension?

So, what exactly is the “XACT” WP suspension components that appear on the recently unveiled 2020 MX and cross-country models from KTM?
Well, the PR doesn’t elaborate a whole lot, and KTM/Husqvarna personnel remain tight-lipped about details ahead of the new models’ official media launches.

As far as we can tell from the info that is provided, the ’new’ XACT fork and shock absorber is simply a rebranded WP 48mm AER air fork and WP “Link-Type” rear linkage with ‘progressive settings’.
But is there more than marketing spin at play here? Probably not. If we were to take an educated guess, we’d say that WP’s XPLOR fork and shock will soon be found on KTM’s enduro and Adventure R models (because the KTM 790 Adv R’s XPLOR suspension is so good, it’ll create consumer pressure for KTM to fit it to future 1090 and 1290 Adventure R models), while the use of the “XACT” fork and shock conveniently avoids any reference to AER (or air), which is still met with scepticism in motocross circles around the world – particularly after a couple of Japanese manufacturers have now reverted to coil-spring KYB or Showa forks for their MX models.

Here’s the official news from KTM…

WP XACT FRONT FORK, WITH AER TECHNOLOGY

The 48mm split air fork features a capsuled air spring and pressurised oil chamber for progressive and consistent damping. The forks feature a progressive setting to match the frame stiffness and are adjusted via the single air pressure valve for pre-load (on the left), and with easy access clickers adjusting damping with 30 clicks (on the right). Additionally, the air pump needed to adjust the air pressure in the fork is provided as standard.
  • Precision engineering, quality materials and advanced production processes guarantee highest performance levels
  • Progressive setting: optimal damping and performance
  • Capsuled air spring and pressurised oil chamber: progressive and consistent damping
  • Easy access clicker dials: simple and fast clicker setting

WP XACT REAR SHOCK

Featuring progressive settings to match the frame rigidity, the WP XACT is perfected to provide optimal damping characteristics while keeping a compact and lightweight design. With a pressure balance inside the shock offering consistent damping, the end result is superior rider comfort and handling. Fully adjustable and matched to a linkage system with a specific geometry, the system delivers the greatest possible traction and absorption. The rear wheel travel is 300mm.
  • Progressive setting: balanced with front-end set-up and frame rigidity
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Pressure balance: consistent damping
  • 300mm wheel travel
