Robbie Maddison: A New Record

9 years ago | Words: Andy Wigan | Photos: Tye Winter/Kurt Teague

Have you ever seen Robbie Maddison sit still for more than five minutes? Nah, neither have we. When your reason for being is conceiving and performing motorcycle stunts that stun even the most hardcore action sports fans into silence, sitting still tends not to be your forte. But last weekend at the Sydney Motorcycle Show, Maddo almost put down roots at Transmoto’s trade stand. He graciously hung around for two hours each day to sign Pipe Dream posters and Transmoto’s 2016 KTM wall calendar (which comes with our Nov-Dec issue, and Maddo’s on its cover), just to make sure he didn’t disappoint the huge turnout of fans who queued to get his autograph and have a quick chat with the man.

And despite still being in pain from recent knee surgery, Maddo must have hobbled up and out of his seat about 2000 times to pose for photographs with fans, never once complaining about the inconvenience. That in itself has got to be a record!

Yes, Robbie Maddison has evolved into much, much more than a reckless daredevil. These days, he’s a calculated professional athlete who’s learned to surround himself with good people. He successfully juggles commitments to sponsors, film producer duties, and the responsibilities of a young family; all the while maintaining the same down-to-earth, boy-from-Kiama authenticity that’s helped make him a household name around the world.

But what’s next for him? What maniacal project has Maddo now got in the pipeline? Robbie couldn’t be drawn to comment about it on the weekend, but his wife Amy did. Well, sort of: “The kids are I are staying here in Australia until April, but Robbie’s heading back to the States early in the New Year to get started on his next project. Like Pipe Dream, he’s been dreaming about making this one a reality pretty much his whole life. After the knee operation, I was hoping he’d relax for a bit longer, but that’s just not in Robbie’s make-up!”

So, what is this lifelong vision Maddo now plans to bring to life? A dirt bike with wings, perhaps? Red Bull sure would like the sound of that!
