Fans flocked to the 2013 Senior Tumbulgum Natural Terrain Motocross Tenth Anniversary Event at Byford, south of Perth to see Luke Davis seal the win, while Matt Schubring soared like an Eagle in an attempt to break the 250ft Australian FMX record. The KTM sponsored event lured Eastern States riders such as Adam Riemann, Ben Grabham, Matt Fish and FMX head-liner, Matt Schubring.
Juniors kicked off the weekend competing on Saturday, with a dash of light rain settling upon the track at the conclusion of racing, ensuring a near-perfect track for the Seniors on Sunday.
The race meeting lived up to the hype, with a motocross-carnival feel to the unique event. The support races were electrifying throughout the day, with each class competing in four motos. The proceedings were kick started with the Novice class, where Jason Herbert dominated the wins and was challenged at times by strong riders including Michael Bell, Thomas Leisk, Justin Hey, Kile Scoon-Reid and Scott Talley.
The A Class Clubman Lites belonged to Brodie Smedley, followed by Ethan Hughes, Caleb Watson, Miikael Kinnunen, Lars Carlton and Mark Brenzi. The B Class Clubman Lites race featured some very tough battles between Bradd Parkisnon, Jack Lansbury, Angus Pike, Toby Thorn, Keagan Williamson and Isaac Gliddon. The Clubman Open Class had the win going to Scott Hewitt with Kris Lindgren, Dylan Furnihough, Blake King, Jack Middlemass and Trent Pollard battling for points, and, at times battling to keep their 450cc machines on the tough at times.
The 30-39 years class featured the first rides for the Eastern states riders as Ben Grabham took the honours, while Matt Fish and Ben Shingler fought hard to keep ahead of Ron Morrison, Alan Brinkworth, Martin Costa and Luke Kitto. The 40-100 years class showcased a tough battle with Michel Drean grabbing several holeshots and early leads, before Warren and Vernon Strange opened up and bustled their way through closely followed by Trevor Unstead, Justin Nobes, Matt Briggs and Nathan Carbon.
The Headlight class allowed the enduro riders to shine, and that they did. Adam Riemann took three moto wins for the Overall, with Leon Clare, Troy Hughes, Joel Miller, Ryan Bruce and Mitch McKenzie all amongst the mix for a top five finish throughout the day.
It was the Pro riders the crowd came to see, and what a series of races they were entertained with. Louis Calvin took the first two moto wins for second Overall, with Luke Davis being simply sensational to watch picking up the second two motos and the Overall win, while Ben Grabham secured the third step of the podium. The Pro/Intermediate/Expert class kept the crowd entertained and it was Luke Davis who scored his third Tumbulgum win of the day. “That makes it three wins here at Tumbulgum,” said Davis. “It was a privlige to race with the likes of Matt Fish and Ben Grabham, and in front of this crowd it was awesome”.
Louis Calvin who picked up second for the day was equally delighted. “I can’t thank KTM enough,” said Calvin. “I have a great bike and a great crew behind me, when the track roughed up we made the changes, but just couldn’t match Luke. We’ll be back for sure”.
Ben Grabham saluted the local WA riders. “I spend eight hours a day on a bike in an enduro so to come out here in motocross and pick up third, I’m pretty happy with that,” said Grabham. “These two boys were tough to catch and it was great to see the riders coming out of Perth. I hope to be able to come back here I wish there were more events like this around Australia”.
FMX superstar, Matt Schubring, battled the windy conditions as he made several attempts to break the Australian FMX long-distance record. “I tried my hardest here today, we made heaps of attempts but the wind conditions just weren’t helping,” said Schubring. “I really thought we had it, but it wasn’t to be, we came up short around the 230 foot mark. I’d love to come back here to WA and have another shot and break that record. 250ft is where I know I can be”.
