2023 GASGAS MXERS: A NEW STRATEGY?

Why is it that experienced riders prefer new-model bikes to be refined versions of their predecessors, rather than completely overhauled specimens, while the rest of us go gaga about the impending arrival of models with “sweeping changes” and a “ground-up rebuild”? Well, new-generation motorcycles – no matter which manufacturer you’re talking about – have a tendency to take a step sideways or even backward for a year or two before everyone figures out how they like to be set up and ridden.

And we suspect this phenomenon helps explains what’s going on with the newest brand in the KTM group’s stable, GASGAS, whose 2023 MX bike range recently broke cover. Unlike their KTM and Husqvarna siblings – both of which are expected to get an all-new platform for 2023 – GASGAS has opted to stay with the existing 2022 platform’s proven package, and simply dosed them with an even sexier shade of red for 2023. Hence the new-model marketing talk of a “proven package with a vibrant new look”.

More significantly, this strategy allows GASGAS to differentiate its offering – from both a component spec and pricing point of view – and in doing so, pursue its core objective of stealing customers from the Japanese brands, rather than its 2023-model KTM and Husky counterparts!
