REGAN DUFFY: OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
In the world of motocross, injuries are an all-too-common occurrence. However, when Regan Duffy suffered a life-threatening injury in October of 2021, it seemed as though his promising career might be over before it even truly began. But despite the odds against him, Duffy was determined to make a comeback.
Duffy recalls, “On October 17, 2021, I was involved in a freak accident at the final round of the state championships in Western Australia in which another bike ran me over unintentionally due to my front wheel being taken out from someone else. The race got red-flagged (cancelled), and the medics along with close family and friends rushed to my aid.”
Duffy’s injuries were life-threatening, and he was rushed to the hospital. “I had torn the Aorta off my heart and was bleeding out on the inside along with collapsed lungs. Among some other injuries. Bunbury Hospital did all they could, giving blood transfusions to me through the blood bags and clamping the artery on my heart that was damaged,” Duffy recalls.
Despite the doctors’ best efforts, Duffy’s condition worsened, and he went into a state of traumatic cardiac arrest. “I unfortunately had a traumatic stroke also where I sustained a Hypoxic ischaemic brain injury. I’m led to believe I was brought back from death multiple times on that flight. One doctor telling my dad it was the worst flight in his life,” Duffy said.
Duffy’s injuries were severe, and he was placed in an induced coma for eight days. Following that, he spent multiple more weeks in the ICU continuing to recover. “I had many doctors and nurses baffled at how I had survived, let alone not been disabled or have permanent damage to parts,” Duffy shared.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Duffy was determined to return to professional competition. In 2023, Duffy signed with GASGAS and began preparing for his comeback season.
For Duffy, so far, his 2023 ProMX Championship comeback season has continued to build momentum, breaking through for his first top 10 finish at Wodonga. “I’m stoked to get my first top 10 since I’ve been back – that’s a little goal ticked off now, so we’ll keep working towards the next one! The second moto was good, we were heading towards that top-five mark and then I threw it down… I think I had a total of nine crashes today, which made things difficult. All in all though, I’m really happy to bounce back after a difficult second round and we will keep working to move forward from here.”
Regan Duffy’s journey has been a testament to his determination and perseverance. Despite the obstacles he has faced, he has never given up on his dreams. With the support of his family, friends, and team, Duffy has proven that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
Everyone here at Transmoto can’t wait to see the No. 72 standing on the top step of the podium. It’s coming; we can feel it…
