MX Nats: Appin’s Best Bits

7 years ago | Words: MX Nationals | Photos: MXN Images

The MX Nationals team express why the Appin circuit is one of the best tracks to watch all the racing unfold on the 2017 Motul MX Nationals calendar.

This weekend the Motul MX Nationals heads to the picturesque Macarthur Motorcycle Club at Appin in New South Wales, and with an unprecedented depth of talent, four classes racing, and a world-class backdrop, it’s one of our favourite rounds on the 2017 Motul MX Nationals calendar. Today we decided to share with you all of Appin’s best bits, so you have no doubt in your mind as to why you need to be trackside for all of the action this Sunday.

The start

Appin is one track where the start is more important than ever. With a double apex first turn into the first chicane, it’s often bar to bar off the start and over the years we’ve seen huge pile-ups, in turn, one with every rider vying for the holeshot. It’s got to be seen to be believed, but 40 riders heading into the first bottleneck is one of the reasons why Appin is one of our favourite tracks on the calendar.

The circuit’s vantage points for viewing

If you’ve been to a round of the Motul MX Nationals at Appin you’ll know exactly what we are talking about. Appin has some of the best viewing areas of any track in the series. Stand at the top of the hill and look down at the entire circuit, bring a few deck chairs and an esky and find a spot amongst the race trucks in the pits, or bring the entire family and wander around the lush green venue for the whole day while the racing plays out. One thing’s for sure, no matter where you park up at Appin you’ll have the best view of the track from any of its many vantage points.

The crowd

If you’re from the area, then you’ll understand why the Appin crowd is truly one of a kind. The fans are like a time capsule. Think 80s and 90s, hanging over the fence, jersey wearing types of fans. They love the sport like you wouldn’t believe and they aren’t afraid to show it. Appin is home to thousands of motorcycling enthusiasts and we’re pretty confident that 99% of them come to round two, which makes the atmosphere at Appin something really special. So get amongst it. Throw your favourite rider’s jersey on and head out for a full day of head to head racing with the locals.

The championship

See what went down at Round 1? Well if you didn’t, basically this year’s Motul MX Nationals is jam packed with the fastest riders in the country across all of the three major championship classes. Dean Ferris is going to be aiming for another flawless MX1 score card at Appin, however, there’s plenty of fast guys who are well within striking distance of last year’s champ. Kyle Peters, Kirk Gibbs, Todd Waters, Brett Metcalfe, Kade Mosig, anyone of these guys can win races which makes this year’s championship one of the most hotly contested titles we’ve seen in years. Appin is another opportunity for riders to snatch up valuable championship points, and we’re tipping there will be nothing left on the track, making the MX1 Championship chase one of the major reasons as to why Appin is a round not to be missed.

The riders and teams

Ever wanted to meet Australia’s top professional racers? Wanted to get up close and personal with the race bikes, see the mechanics at work, and check out the race trucks? Well, Appin is where you can do all of that and more. With a number of teams based out of Sydney, from early on Sunday morning, the pits are buzzing. During the lunch break, fans have the opportunity to grab an autograph from the riders and watch on as the bikes are prepared for their next hit out in the afternoon. It’s a special opportunity for kids and also something pretty cool for the adults too – The riders and teams make Appin a round not to be missed.

So if you’re up for a weekend of adrenaline then make sure you’re at the Appin Motocross Track this Sunday when Yamaha presents the second round of the 2017 Motul MX Nationals on April 23.
