Andy Caldecott memorial statue to be unveiled in August
After Andy Caldecott’s tragic death at the Dakar Rally a little more than five years ago, the residents of his hometown of Keith in South Australia wanted to ensure subsequent generations had the opportunity to know about the man and his incredible international desert racing career. The good news is that the local council has finally given the go-ahead to erect an Andy Caldecott memorial statue in Keith, and it’s set to be unveiled at 10.30am on August 14 at a ceremony open to the public.
According to Rod Flintoff, the Chairman of the Andy Caldecott Memorial Project, “It’s been a fair process to get it all signed off, but we’re very pleased that has now happened. The structure will be an image of Andy with his Dakar bike. It’s two-tonne, life-size structure, laser-cut out of steel and mounted on a concrete base, and the combination of the reflective material and lighting means it will glow at night. Our hope,” Flintoff goes on to explain, “is that the information on the plaques mounted on its base will tell the story of Andy and his amazing achievements for future generations.
The council has seen fit to erect it in a high-traffic area of Keith, not far off the main road.”
Many of Andy’s mates and industry associates will be attending the August 14 unveiling. It’s open to the public, but check the flyer here for RSVP details.
