2017 KTMs: The New Breed
Transmoto recently spent a day out on some secluded dunes with the crew from KTM Newcastle as they put Kato’s 2017 450SX-F and 450EXC-F models to the test; and by all reports, the new machines are vast improvements on already formidable weapons.
If there’s one thing the European manufacturers know how to do well, it’s make improvements. Each year, the release of new orange metal is generally followed up with comments such as, “I didn’t think it was possible, but this is bike even better than the predecessor.” And at the release of this year’s models, it was like there was an echo in the room.
KTM Newcastle’s Myles Bowen (#37) broke in the 450cc motocross and enduro models in the Hunter Valley, and the impression the bikes left on him was evident: “From the smooth power delivery on the EXC-F to the confidence-inspiring punch of the SX-F, these bikes are a step above not only last year’s models from KTM, but the rest of the game. A stable chassis provides great feedback, letting you put it where you want it. Some small suspension tweaks are needed for bigger hits, but the standard machines will outperform most people who sit astride them.”
We were unable to wipe the ear-to-ear grin off Myles’ face, and the fact that Daniel Sanders felt as though he was able to swap from a 2016-model to a 2017-model mid-season is a testament to the quality of the new bikes.
Here are some images from our day in the sandpit…
