2016 MX Nationals: By The Numbers
This weekend, the 2016 Motul MX Nationals champions (across MX1, MX2 and MXD classes) will be crowned at the Coolum Pines MX Track on the Sunshine Coast. Ahead of the highly anticipated season finale, let’s take a look at the all-important numbers that brought us here, and break down the fundamental results that now sees three riders challenging each other for a Thor MX1 title.
Kirk Gibbs – 602 Points
KTM Motocross Racing Team’s Kirk Gibbs has proved this year that consistency is the key to success. He’s been on the podium more times than any of his competitors, yet hasn’t won as many races, and his “quietly chipping away” attitude has paid off. With one round remaining, Gibbs holds on to a six-point lead, but this weekend, last year’s MX1 champion won’t be backing off.
Race wins: 3 (Moto two at Murray Bridge, moto three at Wanneroo and moto two at Shepparton)
GoPro Superpole appearances: 7
GoPro Superpole wins: 1 (Shepparton – 1:40.273)
Round wins: 3
Podiums: 8 (2nd at Horsham, 1st at Broadford, 2nd at Murray Bridge, 1st at Wanneroo, 3rd at Nowra, 3rd at Conondale, 1st at Shepparton and 3rd at Toowoomba)
DNFs: None
Dean Ferris – 596 Points
CDR Yamaha’s Dean Ferris has been explosive this year. He’s won double the amount of races than his competitors, and despite being the only rider in the top-three to register a DNF, he trails his closest competitor, Gibbs, by just six points. This weekend, Ferris will be aiming for two race wins and another GoPro Superpole victory if he’s to clinch this year’s MX1 title.
Race wins: 8 (Moto one at Horsham, moto one at Appin, moto two at Broadford, moto one at Wanneroo, moto two at Wanneroo, moto two at Nowra, moto two at Conondale, moto two at Toowoomba)
GoPro Superpole appearances: 7
GoPro Superpole wins: 4 (Murray Bridge – 1:41.225, Wanneroo – 1:42.344, Nowra – 1:43.497, Conondale – 1:58.516)

DNFs: 1 (Moto three at Wanneroo)
Todd Waters – 578 Points
Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki’s Todd Waters has only won a single round this year, however, he has been on the podium an impressive six times throughout the season. Despite trailing points leader, Gibbs, by 24 points, Waters is still within striking distance of this year’s championship. Both Ferris and Gibbs would need to have an issue at the front, but if there’s one thing we all know at the MX Nationals, it’s that it’s never over until the final chequered flag flies.
Race wins: 4 (Moto one at Broadford, moto one at Murray Bridge, moto one at Conondale and moto one at Shepparton)
