2015 Fox Shoot @ Glamis

10 years ago | Words: The Dillaway Brothers | Photos: The Dillaway Brothers

The 2015 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series had just started when Ken Roczen, Ryan Dungey and the American Fox team descended on Glamis’ sandy dunes for their 2015 gear shoot. Carey Hart, Ronnie Renner and Lance Coury had already been camped out at Glamis for days when the Red Bull KTM stars arrived in a chopper.

Glamis, the setting for so many famous dirt bike scenes, is a three-hour drive from Southern California, where the majority of Pro riders and industry are based, so a chopper was the best way to get the time-pressed factory stars out and back. It also looked pretty damn cool. They touched down to a scene every rider dreams about… glistening dunes, factory-prepped bikes with paddle tyres and the latest Fox gear to wear.

There was just one catch – they weren’t allowed to jump.

With the 2015 Fox shoot taking place between the Anaheim 3 and San Diego rounds of the 2015 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series, KTM were nervous about their stars playing in the sand. Roczen, who had already won a round, was only seven points ahead in the championship, lead while Dungey was a few spots down in sixth. As everyone awaited their arrival, the talk around the camp site was how Roczen and Dungey were only allowed to ride on the strict condition they didn’t jump.

“Good luck enforcing that,” quipped one mechanic. “It’s Roczen’s first time out here. Try telling a 19-year-old who’s just won his first supercross race he can’t jump anything out here.”

Like Roczen, it was our first time out at Glamis and seeing the dunes excites you. They stretch as far as the eye can see with endless options, endless jumps and endless corners to carve. It is the ultimate playground for a dirt bike rider. We, like everyone, knew it would be hard to keep the #94 and #5 on the ground.

After a morning of berm shots, filming intro scenes for the film shown below and lunch, the guys headed out for a final ride – to find some jumps.

Led by the probably the world’s best desert rider, Ronnie Renner, the guys found some nice big hits and let rip. It was a short and sweet session as Roczen and Dungey had to leave early to make it back to SoCal before sunset as the chopper wasn’t equipped for night flying.

We pretty much fluked a front row seat to the Fox shoot. We headed out to Glamis with Metal Mulisha rider, Jimmy Fitzpatrick, and set up camp alongside the Fox guys. While this went down back in February, we wanted to wait for Fox to launch their 2015 gear before sharing this story and images.
