MX/SX

Tension is beginning to build as we head into the final two rounds of the 2012 MX Nationals season. CDR Yamaha’s Josh Coppins extended his lead in the MX1 class to 12 points over Motul Pirelli Suzuki’s Todd Waters after taking victory at Appin. While in the MX2 class, the 10-1-1 efforts of Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing’s Ford Dale was enough to secure the round victory and close the gap on Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha’s Luke Styke, who holds a 31 point lead. Raceline Pirelli Suzuki’s Jay Wilson may have taken his maiden victory for the season, but KTM’s Kayne Lamont still leads the MXD class by 27 points. Round 9 will kick off at Moree on August 19, before heading to Coolum the following weekend for the big finale.

After 17 years of professional racing, CDR Yamaha’s Josh Coppins has announced his retirement plan for the end of the 2012 season. Following a fulfilling career involving success on the World Motocross scene, the current MX Nationals MX1 leader has decided to hang up the boots and, depending on upcoming negotiations with Yamaha, it looks he might take on the role of YMNZ’s race team advisor/manager. Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen took a trip back home to Germany during the two-week break in the AMA Pro Motocross Championship and managed to pick up a victory at the German Motocross Championship on a 450cc machine while he was there. From what we’ve gathered the German youngster was feeling a bit homesick, and the visit home may have done him some good. Roczen will look to contest the last round of the FIM World MX1 Championship against the likes of Antonio Cairoli and Clement Desalle.

Antonio Cairoli has no intention of competing in the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, as he feels the Grand Prix series is much richer in talent. The Italian previously showed signs of wanting to race in America, but it seems as though that idea is long gone. Jeffrey Herlings however mentioned that he might race in America for the 2014 season. If Herlings wins this year’s World MX2 Championship, under FIM regulations, he is only allowed to defend the title in 2013 before being forced up to the MX1 class. Herlings mentioned the possibility of racing in America in the 250cc class before returning to Europe to race in the 450cc class.

Bring a 250 with loud pipes or a 450 with whatever you want.” Hahn enjoyed a career-best second Overall in the 2010 Western Regional Supercross Lites Class Championships.

With rounds nine and 10 of the AORC cancelled due to untimely weather, surely its competitors weren’t going to kick up their feet on the couch and have a quiet one at home, right? No, of course not. Big off-road names such as Toby Price, Josh Green and many more flocked to Appin to compete in the MX Nationals, and their performances weren’t too shabby at all with KTM’s Price finishing as high up as fourth in a race of the Pro Open division.

Four times Dakar winner, KTM’s Cyril Despres, took home victory at the sixth and final stage of the Desafio Rally in Argentina, along with the Overall for the event. The French-born rider finished the six-day event just short of a minute ahead of local rider Mario Gomez, with KTM rider Jakub Przgonski in third. You can grab the race recap here.
